[Fashion Friday] Victor Dzenk Summer 2015

This Brazilian label, Victor Dzenk, is quite fabulous. It has been around since 1998 and is very popular in retail stores throughout Brail and also internationally. They even have two exclusive stores in Rio de Janeiro and one in Belo Horizonte.

Victor's inspiration for the Summer 2015 season was clearly the ocean. I especially loved his creative use of pearls and beading. Check out my favourites from this collection:

The Cost of the Shirt on Your Back

We don't often think about the costs that go into making the clothes that we wear, but it's definitely something to consider, especially when basic human rights are largely being ignored in the process of garment making.

This issue has been in the media a lot recently, ever since the tragic building collapse of the Rana Plaza in Bangladesh last year that left over 1,000 workers dead.

I've watched a few documentaries concerning the garment-making industry and this interactive article with videos from The Guardian is the best one I've come across. It covers the past, present and what the future could look like for the industry if no changes are made.

It's definitely worth 15 minutes! You can check it out through this link: http://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2014/apr/bangladesh-shirt-on-your-back

[Tattoo Tuesdays] Jay Freestyle

I am super obsessed with this notion of "freestyle tattoos". Let the artist work his magic instead of being boxed into a pre-drawn design!

Jay Freestyle seems to be the best. Jay hails from South Africa and now lives and works in Amsterdam. His colours are so brilliant and his images so stunning...

What do you think? Would you let someone tattoo you without seeing the design first?

[Monday Models] Sophie Touchet

I am not usually a fan of redheads, but I am loving Sophie Touchet. She is absolutely brand new to the modelling scene, having just started at the beginning of 2014! Seriously!

This 19-year old French Canadian walked in 43 shows during the Fall/Winter 2014 Ready to Wear season, so she definitely is starting very strong.

Rag & Bone Fall/Winter 2014 RTW

I love her look and her attitude. Though I am more excited to see her model clothes for the Spring/Summer season since some of these dark looks from the Fall/Winter season make her look too gothic. To me, she is much better portrayed as youthful and cherry-cheeked!

I really hope she continues modelling and gains success. I'd love to see her around for many years to come!

Here are my favourite shots of Sophie from the Fall/Winter 2014 shows/season...

[Street Art Sundays] Man-O-Matic

I think it's great that many businesses are realising the popularity and appeal to street art. You find many more commissioned pieces for sides of business' buildings now.

One of the most popular Spanish commissioned street artists is Man-O-Matic. His company name is Sioke. His work is astounding, so it's easy to see how he became successful!

Here is some of his latest work...

[Fashion Fridays] TNG Summer 2015

I love this hip Brazilian brand, TNG. Their clothes are relatively normal, but the styling from their Summer 2015 show was brilliant. It pulled everything together to make you want to drool!

Though TNG is definitely more retail-focused rather than a fashion house, I thought their Summer 2015 collection was still worthy enough to be showcased here. What do you guys think?

I usually steer clear of mens lines, but I really liked what TNG is offering for men in their Summer 2015 collection. I didn't post any photos of the men's clothes here, since I focus on women's fashion, but you can check out the full collection here.

Icon Woman: Angela Ahrendts

I am utterly impressed with Angela Ahrendts, who recently left Burberry to work at Apple as the new Senior Vice President of Retail.

(source)
She actually reminds me a bit of myself; I guess that's why I'm so intrigued by her story. She loved design and decided to study it in college, but she realised she wasn't quite as creative as she thought. Luckily she didn't give up, much because of a professor that gave her a hint that she should look into merchandising/marketing since she was good at critiquing her classmates.

But above all, the way that she has stuck to her family values in the difficult fashion powerhouse industry is inspiring. Though a bit unbelievable since she does mention that she worked crazy hours at the beginning of her career... so I guess it happens to the best of us. :)

I highly recommend watching these short videos clips from a MAKERS interview with Angela. Unfortunately the embedding doesn't work, so click through the below link to see it!

[Monday Models] Carolina Thaler

Today's model is another newcomer, who I love seeing on the runway. She hasn't hit it big with publications and brand contracts yet, but it could come in the future.

Carolina Thaler is a 22-year old Brazilian model who walked her first big show in Paris in 2011 (Dior). Since then, she has consistently been invited back and walks in dozens of shows each season.

(source)
I love her classic look. She's not sexy, punk, nor childish. She's simply a classically beautiful woman.

[Street Art Sundays] Colorful Stairways in Istanbul

This story is a bit old, but it's worth posting on this Street Art Sundays series because it's such a cool act of defiance by local communities in Istanbul, Turkey.

In August 2013, a 64-year old man named Huseyin Cetinel decided to paint his neighbourhood Findikli's steps "to make people smile." He chose rainbow colours and went to work with one other person to paint a huge staircase connecting Findikli to Cihangir. By the way, he purchased about $725 in paint and supplies himself.

(source)
Surprisingly, the municipality sent workers to re-paint the steps gray after about a week.

[Fashion Fridays] Salinas Summer 2015

Many of you are getting into the summer mood with school letting out soon and warmer weather as each day passes. Today's designer is Salinas, who showed some really fun tomboyish and super colourful bathing suits for their Summer 2015 collection in Rio de Janeiro just last month.

Salinas is a Brazilian-based company which has dozens of stores in Brazil and also sells in high-end stores and boutiques internationally. The company's design team is headed by Jacqueline de Biase, who started the company in the 1980's.

I love love love this collection. The cuts are new and just sexy enough to be fun, but you can still jump in the water and not worry about flashing every bystander. The colours are tropical with really beautiful and unique prints, which will have everyone on the beach jealous of you.

Here are my favourites:

Takao Inoue's OLED Dandelion Lights

So this is totally ridiculous.

What is that, you ask? These are dandelions suspended in acrylic blocks. Yeah, don't ask me how that works.

As if that weren't cool enough, look what designer Takao Inoue did to finish the display at Milano Salone:

[Tattoos Tuesdays] Paul Vander Johnson

Even though I'm not into comics and video games, Paul Vander Johnson's animated tattoos (and some realistic tattoos) are amazing.

If you are into this sort of thing, get your butt to England for some ink from the master!

[Monday Models] Valery Kaufman

Today's model is Valery Kaufman, a Russian beauty!

She is brand new to the professional modelling scene, making her big breakthrough in 2012 at the Spring/Summer 2013 shows, where she walked in many of them and even opened for DKNY!

She's been modelling since she was 17 and is now 20 years old. Some people are just made to be professional models. :)

(source)
A fun fact about Valery is that she loves to dance. She was on a professional traveling dance team with her sister and they traveled around the world competing against teams from other countries. Excellent training being in front of people and working a crowd!

Here's what Valery has been up to most recently. Keep your eye on her because she's bound to do big things!

I love his thought-provoking street art. Enjoy!

Hilltop Garden Terrace in San Francisco

I love outdoor living spaces. After living in Panamá, I value the environment even more. What better than to create a beautiful and comfortable patio, yard, garden, terrace, etc.? Somewhere that inspires you and relaxes you. Somewhere to let go and dream of grand things.

I stumbled across this project from Mary Barensfeld Architechture firm and it's amazing. I love her design on this sloped backyard. It would have been easy and boring to put in stairs to the top and make a pretty overlook deck, but she went above and beyond and created a Japanese-inspired zig-zagged path amongst trees and shrubbery. Although the cement walls wouldn't have been my choice, the rest of the design is very Zen.

[Fashion Fridays] Lolitta Summer 2015 RTW

Today's label is Lolitta, of designer Lolita Zurita Hannud from Brazil.

Lolita is relatively new, with this Summer 2015 RTW season being her first show at the São Paulo Fashion Week. And she's only 26 years old! She's been sewing and designing since she was a young teen, playing on the floor amongst her mother and other seamstresses, from whom she learned.

She now sells her line in over 60 stores in Brazil and internationally.

Her Summer 2015 RTW season was inspired by cultural Mexico and I think she did a beautiful job of melding tradition with modernity.

Here are my favourites from her show:

Sweet Clothes by Kolonaki

I am definitely a romantic. I like romantic English gardens, pink, kisses, lace…

This certainly shows up in my wardrobe more than anything. Silky satins or breezy linens are my go-to before tough leather and polyester.

Kolonaki is a Spanish label based in Madrid and I am uber obsessed with their clothes. The company was started by two women who wanted to design for the everyday; who found inspiration in walks, songs, photographs, and the way that they live their life.

Check out my favorites from the Spring 2014 collection…

Pants Company called Matter

I am all about small companies, especially ones who have really thought about every step in their process.

Matter is a new clothing company specializing in pants. And their pants are adorable! But what caught my eye was their business model. They are working directly with the artisans and using traditional designs to preserve this hand-made artwork and handiwork. With their international connections and design background, they are bringing this cool look to the modern market.

Check out their first pants line…

[Tattoos Tuesdays] White Ink Tattoos

White ink tattoos are unique because they are lightly visible on white skin and tend to fade and often disappear over time. They have become a bit controversial because of this and some tattoo artists refuse to tattoo in only white ink.

Forgetting the morality or personal reasons, some do turn out quite beautiful. Here are some of my favorites…

[Monday Models] Elisabeth Erm

Today's model is a newcomer! She just started professional modelling in 2013. :) Let's welcome Elisabeth Erm to the locura!! She's only 21 so she has plenty of time to bloom.

I know she's going to be big. She has the perfect classic look and kills it on the runway.

(source)
Elisabeth is also Estonian, which is pretty cool considering there are very very very few professional Estonian models. Rock it, girl!

Models typically get noticed or picked up by brands on the catwalk. Elisabeth has walked in multiple shows starting from the Fall 2013 RTW collection.

Here are her most recent editorials and shows...

Ben Heine's Digital Circlism

I featured Ben Heine a few days ago and I wanted to highlight another project of his that I think is super cool.

He calls it "Digital Circlism" and it is a simple concept which Ben does with perfection. He takes a portrait of someone and places it on a black background. Then he begins to place circles of differing tones to fill in the portrait. And voilà, after 150 hours of work you have a masterpiece!

[Fashion Fridays] Osklen Summer 2015

Resort clothes are pretty much the best. Who doesn't love to dress in bright flowing colours, satiny fabrics, with sun-kissed skin... let's dream of vacation for a bit...

I wasn't super impressed with the designers from Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo's Summer 2015 shows (just ended on April 11th). However, Osklen was a wonderful surprise.

Osklen is a Brazilian designer who I am so happy to have stumbled upon. His collections are fresh, sexy and classic - my favorite style.

Check out my favorite pieces from his Summer 2015 collection…

Vochol:Huíchol Art on Wheels

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!

The Huichol indigenous group in Mexico spent 9,000 hours assembling over 2 million seed beads and fabric to create this monstrosity in 2011!

It's absolutely incredible. Here are some more photos:
