[Monday Models] Frida Gustavsson

Frida Gustavsson is another model who is easy to fall in love with at first glance. She's a cute and youthful Swede, though she has really shown a maturity in her modelling in the last couple of years and has produced some amazing pictures across different spectrums.

At only 20 years old, she could have a long career ahead of her. But she says that she wants to become a fashion stylist focusing on pattern and product design!

Frida started modelling in 2008 (at age 15) and moved to Japan to pursue her career. She really took off in 2009 when she was the 4th most requested model for runways shows for the Spring 2010 season. Now she is a common face on top runways and has started to build a strong editorial and advertising career as well, especially as the new face of Maybelline.

[Street Art Sundays] Faith47

Today's artist, Faith47, is a woman from South Africa, though her work can be found all over the world.

As you will see from some of her recent work below, she likes to focus on the human condition, suffering, connection to animals and ethereal meanings.

Enjoy!

[Monday Models] Magdalena Frackowiak

I first fell in love with Magdalena Frackowiak's square face and strong jaw in the 2008 Ralph Lauren campaigns.

Ralph Lauren Fall/Winter 2008
She's tiny too! Which doesn't typically line up with Polish women.

Her mom actually launched her modelling career after she sent photos to a contest in Warsaw when Magdalena was 16. She won and was scouted by a top agency and never looked back.

[Street Art Sundays] DALeast

DALeast is a very secretive graffiti artist......... all I found on him is that he is Chinese (maybe that explains it?), he lives in Cape Town, South Africa (at least he did in August 2013) with his wife, also an artist.

What I do know is that his artwork is unique and incredibly beautiful, in its own special way.

[Monday Models] Jessica Stam

You very likely might recognize Jessica Stam's face, even if you aren't in the fashion world. She is considered an Industry Icon, and for good reason!

This Canadian beauty is famous for her "doll face" and can own a catwalk like a champion. Her trademark face is always very serious, but every so often she'll flash a happy smile.

After being discovered in 2002 at the age of 16, she won the Los Angeles Model Look Contest and gained the attention of photographer Stephen Meisel. Meisel really is credited as starting her super model career since he cast her in every one of his campaigns.

She took off in 2006, walking in 64 shows during Fashion Week. And for better or worse, she had a famously horrific fall during the Chloe Fall 2006 show in Paris.

Now, at almost 28 years old, Jessica has made a big name for herself in the fashion industry and will be here to stay for many many more years.

[Street Art Sundays] DUMBO Walls

Another awesome project in New York City was the DUMBO Walls Project to beautify and eclectify this neighborhood. Here are the details:

"The DUMBO BID, Two Trees Management Co. in partnership with the New York City Department of Transportation's Urban Art Program and the Jonathan Levin Gallery present "DUMBO Walls," a series of eight outdoor murals within a four-block stretch of DUMBO along the BQE.

"Artists include DALeast, Eltono, Shepard Fairey, Faith47, Craig Anthony Miller, MOMO, Stefan Sagmeister, and Yuko Shimizu.

"Using brick walls as canvases, the international and local artists have transformed DUMBO's streetscape into an outdoor gallery."

Scientific Art by Fabian Oefner

I came across Fabian Oefner last year, but didn't post his work for some reason. I stumbled upon him again (from his TED Talk) and decided to finally write about his work.

WHICH IS INCREDIBLE! And it is incredible in its simplicity, more than anything.

Fabian is only 29 years old and is from Switzerland. Despite his age, his curiosity has gotten the best of him, and in the best way. His goal is to meld science and art so he does scientific experiments, some simple and some more complex, and takes photos to capture the still-life effect from the experiment.

His results speak for themselves.

Cozy Spanish Home

This home is so dreamy....

Source
The house was built as an addition so that the grown child and her family would have a comfortable place to stay whenever they visited (which was often!). It is located in a very historical part of Spain called Empordà (in the region of Cataluña).

[Monday Models] Chanel Iman

Some people are simply born to model. In my opinion, that is the case with Chanel Iman.

With Korean and African American ancestry, Chanel Iman embodies beauty and sexy. She has been modelling professionally since the age of 13 (with Ford Models) and even won 3rd place at the Ford Supermodel of the World contest in 2006 at age 15.  The contest showcases young fashion model entrants from over 50 countries in order to discover new talent for the fashion industry.

Now, top fashion designers and brands seek her out every year since she is really one of the few wildly successful African American models.

[Street Art Sundays] NYC DOT

It's been about 4 years since I've been in New York City - yikes!

I love love love New York and I am so happy to see that it keeps improving for its citizens. Check out what the Department of Transportation has helped implement over the past year...

"Ruby Walks"

The New York City Department of Transportation and THE POINT Community Development Corporation have partnered with Bronx-based artist Sharon De La Cruz to present "Ruby Walks," a series of painted metal panels depicting Ruby Bridges along a bridge at Hunts Point Avenue between Bruckner Boulevard and Garrison Avenue. As part of the open call held by THE POINT, artists were asked to explore "portraits" that relate to the past and present in their surrounding neighborhood. Cruz chose the iconic image of Ruby Bridges, the first African American student to attend an all-white elementary school in the South, because she represents change, community and female empowerment.

Dreamy Superreal Photos by Erik Johansson

How intriguing are artists with very vivid minds? I think that artists are the dreamers in our society, but there are few (in my opinion) who are experts at showing us what is going on in their head. I love to celebrate these individuals.

Erik Johansson, a Swede living in Berlin, is a full time photographer and "retoucher". I love how that is now an official job title. :) How many hours did I spend tweaking and retouching photos in Photoshop back in my teens... too bad I didn't stick with it!

I will admit that I'm not a fan of typical retouched photos. I feel like it's not fair to take a picture of a lake and transform it into something it's not. To me, that's what retouching has become; "enhancing" a photo to the point of falsity.

However, Erik's work is just absolutely incredible. He is a master at his craft of turning a photograph into something it's not, and on purpose.

Japanese Embroidered Spheres

This should boggle your mind. It does mine...

Embroidering, in general, is such a delicate and precise art. Now imagine embroidered designs... but on a sphere. BOOM mind blown.

I'm not even going to try to understand it. I'll just sit back and admire the beauty...

Super Cool Idea: Parking Canopy from Plastic Bottles

I am SO into this design from Garth Britzman called "(POP)culture"!

What is it, you ask? Yeah, I was confused at first too.

It's an awesome installation using recycled plastic bottles by hanging the bottles at different string lengths and filling them with just about an inch of colored water.

[Monday Models] Sui He

Wow Sui He is a powerful new model. She just started her career in 2011 and I'm certain she will go far. She is a 24 year old from China and is currently ranked #13 in the Top 50 Models Ranking.

When a model is destined for stardom, everyone picks up on it quickly. In just a few years of debuting internationally, Sui has secured a contract from Chinese brand Shiseido, opened a show for Ralph Lauren, and opened and closed a show for Vivienne Tam. She has walked in the last three Victoria's Secret Fashion Shows. She also appeared on the cover of W magazine's art issue (October 2011) when she was just becoming known - something that rarely happens with top magazines.

This may not seem like a big deal to most people, but you really have to look at how skewed the fashion and modelling industries are to caucasian women. A greater majority of models now are black, but asians are definitely in the tiny minority. So for a Chinese woman to break through the mold as Sui has done, that's fantastic news!

Take a look at what she has been up to this past year...

He has been a graffiti artist for 20 years and now works internationally and represents multiple different graffiti crews. His work is traditional graffiti art and will leave your mind a little boggled...
